Hi, I’m Erik Swanson, an Independent documentary filmmaker. I have created documentaries on a variety of subjects, including – historic battles, human interest stories, Bigfoot, and others. My work is driven by my curiosity and a love visual storytelling.
I strive to find the human element in every story.
Every documentary topic, or subject requires a different approach and aesthetic. One thing I always try to incorporate is the perspectives, and experiences of individuals.
When I cover human interest stories or homelessness I try to focus on the interaction between myself and the interview subject. I aim to emphasize a human interaction, rather than focus on our differences.
When I cover history topics I try to include firsthand accounts by people present at the battles. These primary sources present a unique and compelling portrayal of history that is often lacking in historical documentaries and videos.
When I film more ambiguous topics, such as Bigfoot, I focus celebrating the mystery. Oral histories, and eyewitness experiences are more compelling than attempts to prove or disprove something that so many people believe in.
My Journey into filmmaking started in television
I worked in broadcast, film and video for over 20 years. I created video and post production for numerous clients, including – History Channel, ABC News, CBS News, NBC, ESPN, The Colbert Report, and many more.
I started my career in broadcast design and animation, receiving Emmy nominations for my work. Over the years I expanded my skill set to include visual effects, editing, cinematography, and directing.
In addition to various broadcast projects, I have worked in commercials, branded content, documentary, corporate, and political campaign videos.
My diverse experience and skillset allow me to have a great understanding of how all aspects of video production fit together to form a final product.
This experience has served me well in my documentary work. I am able to draw upon my background to develop creative solutions that best serve the story.
